Amethyst is the semi-precious birthstone for the month of February and the zodiac sign of Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18) as well as the 6th wedding anniversary gemstone.
This transparent purple quartz is the most important quartz variety used in jewellery. Purple has long been considered a royal color so it's not surprising that amethyst has been so much in demand during history. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favourite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian loyalty.
The Greek word "amethystos" is translated as "not drunken". Amethyst was a beautiful nymph changed into a gemstone to save her from Dionysus, who then gave the stone its purple to preserve the wearer from the effects of wine. Amethyst is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia and Argentine, as well as Zambia, Namibia and other African countries.
