Bloodstone is an alternative birthstone for the month of March.
It's a dark green opaque quartz flecked with red spots. Did you know that "bloodstone" derives from the legendary belief that the red coloration resulted from the blood of Christ spilling onto green jasper during the crucifixion? For this reason, too, the stone has been called "martyr's stone." Therefore, bloodstone is known to symbolize courage.
It was also called "heliotrope" by the Greeks which means sun turning. Many believed that the sun turns red when this stone is immersed in water. Polished stones were described to reflect the sun.
Because of its great healing powers, bloodstone was pulverized and mixed with egg whites and honey. An innovation believed to heal tumors and stop bleeding. In the Middle Ages it was also used to remove poison from venomous snake bites. Bloodstone is mined in India, Brazil and Australia.
