Chrysoprase is one of the semi-precious birthstones for the month of May and the zodiac sign of Taurus (Apr 20 - May 20).
It's a variety of chalcedony and a member of the quartz family. It's usually found in a beautiful apple green color, but sometimes is found in a deeper green. The name comes from the Greek "chrysos" meaning "gold" and prason meaning "leek" or "bloom". The Greeks bestowed this name due to the presence of the golden drops that appear to be contained in the stone. Chrysoprase is also said to be the favourite gemstone of Alexandre the Great.
Chrysoprase is believed to facilitate self-expression, courage, and ability to use them wisely. The gemstone is found in Queensland, Australia and many other parts of the world.
