Jade is one of the alternative (mystical) birthstones for the month of March and the 12th wedding anniversary gemstone.
Jade has been known to man for more than 7,000 years. The name jade goes back to the time of the Spanish conquest of Central and South America and derives from "piedra de ijada," loin-stone, as it was seen as a protection against and cure for kidney diseases. Because of it beneficial effect on the kidneys, the stone was known as "lapis nephriticus".
Today jade is highly valued for its beauty. Its many colours are appreciated, but it is the emerald green colour of jadeite called "imperial jade" that is highly sought after by collectors.
