Lapis lazuli is the semi-precious birthstone for the month of September, the zodiac sign of Virgo ( Aug 23-Sep 22) as well as the 9th wedding anniversary gemstone.
The name "lapis lazuli" comes from "lapis" the Latin word for stone and "azula" which comes from Arabic and means "blue". This gemstone looks like it could have come straight from Arabian nights - a deep blue with golden inclusions of pyrites which shimmer like little stars.
This is one of the first gemstones that was worn as jewellery and its history can be traced to many thousands of years ago. Cleopatra is said to have used powered lapis lazuli as eye shadow. These beautiful gemstones were also used to manufacture radiant blue watercolours, tempera and oil-paints to be used on paintings.
Lapis lazuli is considered to be a gemstone of love, friendship and truth as it encourages harmony in relationships and helps its wearer express openly.
