What jewellery should I wear? Ask yourself these 7 questions to find out...

February 8, 2012
Best Jewellery to wearValentine's Day is coming soon and love is in the air. Every woman wants to look her best on this special day. With love, romance and beauty on everyone's mind, I'd like to share with you some helpful tips on how to find the best jewellery to wear for your look and style.

When choosing jewellery, ask yourself these 7 questions to help you choose the best jewellery for you in any situation.

1. What clothing colours am I coordinating with?

The colors in your outfit can serve as a great starting point for choosing jewelry. You can stick with a monochromatic look by choosing jewellery that’s the same color as your outfit. Or, you can highlight a fun pattern by selecting one color from a piece of clothing, such as a skirt or scarf, and choosing jewellery in that color. This is a great way to make the most out of a gorgeous piece of clothing that might otherwise get lost in the shuffle.

Also, if you’re wearing neutral or solid colours, you can add a pop of colour by wearing any colour or multi-coloured jewellery. Finally, classic pearl jewellery usually works with most clothing styles and colours.

2. What metal colour should I wear?

Choose the metal colour according to the colour of your clothes. For example, gold jewellery goes well with dark colors such as black, burgundy or warm colours such as purple, red and orange. Silver jewellery works well with lighter and cooler shades such as whites, blues and greens.

3. What’s my face shape?

Consider your face shape and neckline when choosing jewellery pieces to wear. For example, if you have a round face, select jewellery in elongated shapes such as drop and dangle earrings. If your face is narrow, try to go for round-shaped earrings such as hoop earrings and/or round-bead earrings.

Also, try to wear jewellery proportionate to the size of your face. For example, if you have a small face, wear smaller jewellery pieces or those with simple designs. If your face is larger, you can wear bigger pieces of jewellery, which will not overpower your face. If you have a long neck, you can wear chokers or pendants to accentuate your neckline.

4. What’s my body type?

Consider also your body type when choosing jewellery. If you’re petite, don’t overwhelm your frame by wearing a chunky piece of jewellery. But if you’re tall, large jewellery pieces will complement your look better.

5. What’s my personal style?

Match your jewellery to your personality. If you have an outgoing personality, wear fashion jewellery with lots of colour and panache. If you are less outgoing, select smaller pieces with simple designs, such as small flowers, pendants and beads. If you have a no-nonsense and straightforward personality, look for chunkier jewellery with bold designs.

6. What’s the occasion?

Match jewelry to the occasion. For example, for a formal gathering, you can wear fine jewellery, rhinestones or pieces with more intricate designs. For a casual gathering, you can wear fashion jewellery or jewellery with semi-precious gems. In a professional setting, wear smaller pieces with simple designs.

Also, don’t’ mix up different styles -try to keep your jewellery in the same style as your clothes. For example, if you’re wearing an evening outfit - wear an evening-style jewellery with it and if you’re wearing casual clothing – wear a simple casual jewellery piece.

7. What’s the outfit?

Consider the outfit style that you’re matching with the jewellery. For example, if your outfit is accessorized with sequins, chains or rhinestones, you may want to stay away from additional jewellery or wear some simple jewellery pieces.

However, if you’re wearing a simple outfit such as a solid or small patterned turtleneck, blouse or an open-neck/décolleté dress, then jewellery will help add extra charm to it. Find one focal point in your outfit – whether it’s a statement necklace or an accessory on your dress but make sure it’s just one and not many. Otherwise your outfit will look busy and overwhelmed.

Useful Tip: You’ll also find some really helpful tips in my blog post from October 2011 on “Four Seasons Colour Analysis”, where I’ve covered how to find the colours that look best on you.

Until next time,
