Howlite is the semi-precious birthstone for the month of June and the zodiac sign of Gemini (May 21 - June 20).
It was discovered near Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1868 by Henry How (1828–1879), a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist. The largest deposits of howlite were found in Canada, mostly in Nova Scotia, but this mineral is also mined in the USA, especially in California, and in South Africa.
Howlite comes naturally in milky white or grey colours. As it has porous texture, it can be easily dyed to imitate other minerals, especially turquoise because of the superficial similarity of the veining patterns.
Howlite is thought to have properties that help relieve stress, provide mental stability, as well as strengthen bones and teeth, among other benefits.
